  1. I understand Werdum’s case because it appeared to be a compelling tap, particularly in slow motion, but you don’t stop fighting until the ref stops you, and he stopped as if he had caught his training partner in a sub during training.

  2. I believe Werdum has a strong chance of winning this appeal, as the video clearly shows a tap. Chas Skelly was able to successfully reverse his fight in Colorado in 2018. When anyone clicks, the battle is effectively over.

  3. I believe it is highly unsportsmanlike, but I do not believe it will be reversed. If the unified rules are followed, the ref is the only one who has the authority to stop a fight. A tap is merely a signal to the referee, so if the fight was not stopped here by the referee, I believe Werdum’s case is closed.

  4. I was just listening to a podcast with Charles Oliveira the other day, and he explained why, even though his opponent taps, he never lets go of the sub before the ref intervenes.

    Ferreira’s acts were reprehensible.

  5. Only wait until the ref saves a brazilian guy from falling for the brazilian tap.
Werdum didn’t even loosen his legs after the tap, as far as I could tell.

  6. Werdum felt the tap and immediately gave up spot for a split second, and when he remembered the ref wasn’t involved another split second later, he got pummeled for it. The transfer was made with that goal in mind.

Werdum is right in this case; using the Brazilian tap is a clumsy pass. But there’s no way this is going to be reversed.

  7. Why are we behaving as if Fabricio Werdum, a former UFC champion and a 20-year veteran with stints in PRIDE, UFC, and Strikeforce, doesn’t know how to keep a sub before the ref takes you off or indicates the fight is over? This “we have to honor it when your warrior gives up” nonsense is not how he has behaved in the past.

  8. MMA CHEATING 101 LESSON #67: Always tap in a position where the ref can’t see you but your opponent can feel you when you’re in a submission. To get away, take advantage of the temporary halt. Both allegations should be denied.
